Likes and Dislikes

Likes and dislikes here are used to expression what people like or dislike about something.

Example sentences:

1.      Positive Statement (Expressing Likes)

-        I like rose flowers.

-        I like football very much.

-        I like meat ball.

-        She likes singing.

-        Dessy likes One Direction.

-        I enjoy my travelling.

-        I love sport very much.

-        I adore Michael Jackson as a King of Pop.

-        I adore…

-        I ‘m crazy about…

-        I’m mad about…

2.      Negative Statement (Dislikes)

-        I don’t like fast food.

-        She doesn’t like Rock music.

-        Ferdi doesn’t like Japanese food.

-        I dislike watching horror movie.

-        I hate it.

-        I can’t bear….

-        I abhor…

-        I can’t stand…

-        I detest…

Things to remember about likes and dislikes:

1.      When these expressions are followed by a verb, the latter is put in the -ing form.
Examples:

"I like listening to music."
"I hate wearing sunglasses."

I like	VERB+ING
I detest
I don't mind

2.      Note that" very much" & " a lot" always come after the things you like.
Examples:

 "I like basketball very much/a lot. NOT" I like very much/a lot basketball."

3.      Be careful when you use "I don't mind..."
Examples:

"Do you mind playing football?"
"No, I don't mind."(Although it's in a negative form, it means that it's ok for me. I neither love it nor hate it.)

Example Dialog 1:

Jonah   : What kinds of music do you like, Farah?
Farah   : I’m partial to classical music. What about you?
Jonah   : I like jazz and 50’s and 60’s rock and roll.
Farah   : What is your favorite kind of food?
Jonah   : Mexican food, without a doubt. What’s yours?
Farah   : I don’t really have a favorite. I like all kinds of food, except Thai food. It’s too spicy for me.
Jonah   : Who is your favorite movie star?
Farah   : Brad Pitt, he’s so handsome. Who do you like?
Jonah   : My favorite actor is Sean Connery and my favorite actress is Jody Foster.

Dialog 2

Herry   : Hi, darling. Do you fancy watching a film tonight?

Wulan  : Oh, no thanks. I don’t really like watching a film tonight. How about going out instead.

Herry   OK. Do you feel like going to the theater?

Wulan  : On, no. I hate it. Do you like eating at the new Chinese restaurant?

Herry   : I don’t mind. The Chinese cuisine is alright.

Wulan  : Well, I really love it. Let’s go.
